TN House honors Michael Jackson; he ‘was Elvis’ son-in-law’ after all
NASHVILLE — The state House of Representatives voted today to approve a resolution honoring the late entertainer Michael Jackson. The vote was 51-22 votes with 16 members abstaining.
The resolution was originally submitted for approval on a “consent calendar” of non-controversial bills and resolutions by its sponsor, Rep. G.A. Hardaway, D-Memphis. Any bill can be “bumped,” or removed, from the consent calendar on request of a single member.
House Republican Caucus Chairman Glen Casada bumped the bill from the consent calendar when it first came up, saying a couple of caucus members objected to the cost. State Rep. Donna Rowland, R-Murfreesboro, has calculated the cost of a congratulatory resolution as averaging about $800, including the staff time needed to write it.
In brief debate, Hardaway read portions of the resolution praising Jackson for his charitable contributions and success in music and entertainment.
Rep. Gerarld McCormick, R-Chattanooga, noted that Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley, in the Memphis suburb of Whitehaven.
“He was Elvis’ son-in-law and that ought to count for something,” said McCormick.
Rep. Eric Swafford, R-Pikeville, made a brief statement using lines from some of Jackson’s songs. An example: “This is easy as A, B, C or 1, 2, 3.”
The 51 votes gave the resolution just one vote more than the 50-vote minimum needed for House passage. The resolution now goes to the Senate.
